Astronaut Captures 2 Volcanoes in Single Orbit

Less than a week into a planned six-month stay aboard the International Space Station and Italian astronaut Luca Parmitano sure is getting an eyeful. He posted this extraordinary shot of the Paluweh volcano in the Flores Sea, Indonesia, on Twitter.

“What did I say about active volcanoes?,” the rookie astronaut wrote. “I can’t believe I saw 2 in one orbit.”

His prior shot was the Bagana volcano on Bougainville Island of Papua New Guinea.

Parmitano, the first Italian astronaut to be assigned to a long-duration mission, also will be the first from his country to make a spacewalk. His Twitter feed is @Astro_Luca.(Jun 4, 2013 01:30 PM ET // by Irene Klotz)
