On Tomb-Sweeping Day Chinese villagers display sacrifice rituals on a gate tower along the Great Wall in Chengziyu, praying for peace and a good harvest.

This photo was one of a seven-part series that was named the best photo essay in the National Geographic Society's 2007 Global Photography Contest.

The essay told the story of China's Great Wall by showing how the lives of the people nearby are continually shaped by their shared history, the judges noted. The residents of Chengziyu are descendants of the builders of the iconic landmark.

"This photographer allowed the Great Wall to recede so the people behind the icon could come forward," said judge Darren Smith, international editions design editor for the National Geographic Society.
