Donets'k, Ukraine, November 19, 2007—Weary miners emerge from the Zasyadko coal mine—survivors of a powerful methane explosion that killed approximately 80 people and left another 20 or so trapped underground.

In total about 350 miners managed to return to the surface alive. But rockslides and raging fires forced officials to call off remaining rescue efforts on Wednesday, according to wire reports.

One of the deadliest coal mining accidents in Ukraine in recent years, the blast highlights the industry's dangerous working conditions and routine neglect of safety rules, officials say—at a time when growing world demand for coal has caused the country to ramp up mining efforts.
